Genre Conventions Production Techniques

War films try to look and feel as real as possible.
Some common techniques are:

Realistic uniforms, weapons, and vehicles=in some movies they pay big attention to detail.

Shaky handheld cameras to make it feel like you’re there

Loud sound effects guns, explosions, yelling

Gritty, dark color tones to match the mood

Big battle scenes mixed with close-ups of emotion

Heavy use of smoke, dirt, and lighting to show chaos

Institutional Conventions How the Genre Is Marketed

War movies are often promoted as powerful and emotional. Trailers usually show big battle scenes mixed with quiet, sad moments.
Studios use things like:

“Based on a true story” to make it feel real

Big actors or famous directors

Posters showing soldiers, flags, or destroyed cities

Release dates around Veterans Day or awards season

They appeal to people who like action but also stories about courage and sacrifice.

Film Sample #1 Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Directed by Steven Spielberg, this movie changed how war films are made. The opening D-Day scene is one of the most realistic battle scenes ever filmed. The camera work and sound make you feel like you’re on the beach.
It’s about a group of soldiers risking their lives to save one man, showing the value of life and friendship in a brutal situation. The movie shows both the horror and humanity of war.

Film Sample #2 Fury (2014)

Directed by David Ayer, Fury follows a tank crew during the final days of World War II. The film focuses on how close the men become and how the war changes them.
Real tanks and authentic sets make it look very real. The movie mixes intense action with emotional moments, showing how war pushes people to their limits.
It fits the war genre because it’s about survival, loyalty, and the heavy cost of fighting.

Me
I’m so happy we got to do an assignment like this. In the past year, I’ve completely become a nerd for war movies, and I love them. I’ve watched almost all of the ones on this list except the last three, and they really interest me. I think it’s so cool and fascinating that there were millions of soldiers in World War I and World War II, each with their own stories. When I watch these movies, I learn so much and feel so many different emotions. Sometimes I cry, sometimes I laugh, and sometimes I feel like jumping out of my seat because the Germans are coming after the Americans and the soldiers do something brave to pull off the victory. I really hope they keep making more war movies because in my opinion, there should be many more since there are still so many untold stories out there.

images
1.This is my favorite WW1 movie
2.the second picture is from Inglourious Basterds it's not historically accurate at all but it's a good movie.
3.Hacksaw Ridge is an amazing movie my 3rd favored from WW2 and my favorite from the pacific theater, I heard from actual veterans that letter from ewojima was also good.
4.1917 was good because it was filmed in all one shot. But the actual story was not very good the plot was hard to keep up with and a the end you had no idea if they actually called of the attack.
